Quickly Look Up Words on Mac

Use This Trick to Quickly Look Up Words on Mac

Look Up is a feature available on macOS that allows users to quickly find definitions of words and phrases in Apple’s dictionary or other configured sources on their Mac. While there are a few different ways to use Look Up on macOS, one of the most common is by using a keyboard shortcut – simply select the word and press Command + Control + D.

However, this method may not be intuitive for all users and the keyboard shortcut may interfere with certain apps that use the same shortcut for other actions. An alternative way to use Look Up is to invoke it with a trackpad gesture. Here’s how to set this up on your Mac:

1. Go to System Settings (on macOS Ventura) or System Preferences (on older macOS versions).
2. Select Trackpad and toggle on the switch for Force Click and Haptic Feedback.
3. In the Look Up & Data Detectors dropdown menu, choose Force Click with One Finger if your Mac supports force touch, or Tap with Three Fingers if it does not.

Once Look Up has been set up to use the trackpad gesture, users can easily find definitions of any word or phrase by either force clicking or tapping with three fingers on the word or phrase. Look Up will then display a card with information about the queried word or phrase, including tabs at the bottom for Dictionary, Wikipedia, App Store, and more.

Users can click on any of these tabs to view relevant results or click the Open in Dictionary button at the bottom of the page to see all definitions and additional information about the word or phrase in a new window.

The sources for the Dictionary tab can be configured by clicking the Configure Dictionaries button at the bottom of the page and checking or unchecking the boxes next to the desired sources. Users can also rearrange the order of the sources by dragging them in the list.

Overall, the Look Up feature on macOS offers an easy and convenient way for users to find definitions and additional information about words and phrases on their Mac using trackpad gestures. This can save time and effort compared to traditional word searches.
